Majjhima Nikaya MN.22. Alagadduupama Sutta: The Simile of the Snake (อลคัททูปมสูตร)
40. “Therefore, bhikkhus whatever is not yours, abandon it, when you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time. What is it that is not yours?
Material form (ruupa) is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Feeling (vedanaa) is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Perception (sa~n~naa) is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Formations (sankhaara) are not yours. Abandon them. When you have abandoned them, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Consciousness (vinnaana) is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
41. “Bhikkhus, what do you think? If people carried off the grass, sticks, branches, and leaves in this Jeta Grove, or burned them, or did what they liked with them, would you think: ‘People are carrying us off or burning us or doing what they like with us’?”–“No, venerable sir. Why not? Because that is neither our self nor what belongs to our self.”–“So too, bhikkhus, what ever is not yours, abandon it; when you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time. What is it that is not yours? Material form is not yours…Feeling is not your…Perception is not yours…Formations are not yours…Consciousness is not yours. Abandon it. When you have abandoned it, then will lead to your welfare and happiness for a long time.
Sa.myuttha Nikaaya SN.IV.35.138. Not Yours (อัคคัยหสูตรที่ ๑)
“Bhikkhus, whatever is not yours, abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness. And what is it, bhikkhus that is not yours? They eye is not yours: abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness. The ear is not yours … the nose is not yours … the tongue is not yours … the body is not yours … the mind is not yours: abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, people were to carry off the grass, sticks, branches, and foliage in this Jeta’s Grove, or to burn them, or to do with them as they wish. Would you think: ‘People are carrying us off, or burning us, or doing with us as they wish’?”
“No, venerable sir. For what reason? Because, venerable sir, that is neither our self nor what belongs to our self.”
“So too, bhikkhus, the eye is not yours … the ear is not yours … the nose is not yours … the tongue is not yours … the body is not yours … the mind is not yours: abandon it. When you have abandoned it, that will lead to your welfare and happiness.”
Sa.myuttha Nikaaya SN.II.12.37. Not Yours (นตุมหากํสูตร)
At Saavatthi. “Bhikkhus, this body is not yours, nor does it belong to others. It is old kamma, to be seen as generated and fashioned by volition, as something to be felt. Therein, bhikkhus, the instructed noble disciple attends carefully and closely to dependent origination itself thus: When this exists, that comes to be; with the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that does not come to be; with the cessation of this, that ceases. That is with ignorance as condition, volitional formations [come to be]; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness … Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering. But with the remainderless fading away and cessation of ignorance comes cessation of volitional formations, cessation of consciousness … Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.”
